Cybergrrl Goes to the Movies

MY WORLD: [my favorite things][writings & musings]

I love movies of all kinds. Okay, I don't really like too many comedies but I really love action/adventure and sci-fi thrillers. I can sit through movies all day. I can rent 6 movies from Blockbuster on Saturday, and then rent another 6 movies on Sunday. Someday, I'm going to make a movie. What else is a movie addict to do?

Hey, get the feeling I haven't had a chance to see any movies lately? So many movies I want to see - when will I find the time?

Cybergrrl - Movie Critic

I feel the need for a movie marathon coming on!

Long Kiss Goodnight - It has been ages since I've been to the movies as you can see. And what a way to get back to moviegoing! Renny Harlin is definitely trying to position his wife Gina Davis as the female Arnold Schwartzenegger - and it works! At least for me. Woman of steel - finely honed instincts - impeccable use of weapons. I look forward to the sequel. She'll be back!

Courage Under Fire - I arrived at the theatre late and missed the previews (my favorite part of any movie) and about 5 minutes of the film. Fortunately, I decided to stay. Although Courage Under Fire isn't exactly the most riveting movie I've ever seen - it seemed a little bit formulaic - it did stay in my mind as I mulled over each version of the same story. Denzel was excellent, Meg Ryan dealt really well with a character that was quite out-of-character for her and Lou Diamond Phillips was strong. All in all, a well-done flick.

Phenomenon - Maybe it's just me, but although this was a very sweet film, it also felt pretty 'formula' - am I suddenly a jaded movie viewer? Let's hope not! John Travolta was charming and Kyra Sedgewick was really wonderful and beautiful, but I think I enjoyed Powder a little more (except the end of that film was a bit over the top). I think this film was a more realistic version of Powder with bigger stars.

The Rock - Explosives and well-developed characters makes for an excellent flick. Nicholas Cage is very funny, Sean Connery is very handsome, Michael Biehn (my favorite since the TV show "The Runaways") was hard-core. Suspense was high, action was non-stop - I really liked this movie!

Eraser - Arnold is Arnold and he is the only one who can really make us all suspend even our most cynical disbelief - he can do everything, anything, and keeps coming back for more. Vanessa Williams held her own and didn't scream too much - actually showed some smarts under duress and with gun in hand. Overall pretty good stuff.

Mission: Impossible - I guess I have no problem suspending my disbelief and actually don't really mind if I don't understand the plot twists - the action is what grabs me and yes, that scene in the white room with him dangling from the cable was really terrific. Tom Cruise is, well, Tom Cruise. I read a funny review with some reference to Emannuel Beart's lips getting in the way of her acting. A few techno gizmos but nothing like my fave James Bond.

Twister - Great effects, yes. I like Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton (does anyone remember Bill from the excellent flick "Near Dark?") It is what it is. But as I overheard someone say, "It's the weather! How much can you really care about the weather?"
